Man is certainly a complex creature and the most complex parts are the brain / mind / consciousness. I have spoken of many different aspects of the mind and of problems we have in life and of their solutions. So now I come to a very important issue. How mankind views his world. In all aspects of communication, this article that you are reading for example, the ego is the filter or mechanism by which we understand communication. It is because of the ego that we have an incredible capacity for communication and processing of information. There is unconscious communication but as the term implies we are unaware of this communication. That is, our ego is unaware.

So nearly all of communication that we are aware of, is obviously conscious communication and is filtered by the ego. The enormity of this type of communication is mind boggling but because it is one of the main and common things we do. We simply take it for granted.

There is however a major problem and it is because conscious communication is filtered by the ego. The ego is unaware of unconscious communication and therefore unconscious communication and understanding is unknown and unavailable to the ego/ conscious and also based on a different reality.

What do I mean by a different reality? Herein lays the big questions to life, such as what is the meaning of life? How did it all begin, who am I? Etc.

Where do I begin! I typed in the headline and started, so I’ll try and explain. Looking at the first paragraph, I typed in “How mankind views his world” This is where I’ll begin. The sentence should be ‘How the ego views the world”. For man does not view the world. The ego does and the ego views it according to its understanding of itself, which is severely limited. The ego views its world. It perceives how the world is and the ego believes its perception and the ego loves when it is in harmony with the shared perception of others. The ego understands itself as master of mind and body, this thing that I am. But the mind and body can exist without the ego and yet without the mind and body the ego is nothing it cannot exist. Animals have mind and body but no ego, though higher order mammals have to different degrees an ego and they will develop the more they evolve. The point is, an ego is useful (essential to be able to function in our society) but not essential for life.

Communication is a highly adaptive tool that helped mankind to flourish and give it an advantage over other animals and predators. In order to communicate effectively and to ensure the survival of the species, a new part of the brain was needed to manage this tool. Hence the ego. And for communication to be effective, identity was needed. For without an identity, communication would be very difficult and problematic. Identity solved the problem and communication has evolved into what it is today.

This may be hard to grasp because it is so engrained in all aspects of our living, but identity is a concept. It developed to assist communication, which was needed to ensure the survival of the species. The concept of Identity necessitated the concept of Duality. This has resulted in a plethora of meanings that have hindered mankind. It is almost impossible to reject the idea of duality. For in order to reject duality, your ego needs to reject it, for the ego is in charge of
communication (of which ideas are). To reject duality the ego would have to reject the concept of identity. Which it can’t, for then it would cease to be needed, would cease to be. Now identity, though a concept, is real because we choose to believe it is real. But it is a reality that is layered over a deeper reality. Identity is true only in that it is a useful construct.

The deeper reality is that there is only oneness. Duality is true only in that it is a useful construct. It overlays the deeper reality of singularity. One side of a coin is, only because the coin is, you can’t have the side without the coin. The unconscious is aware of and operates at
this deeper reality. There are many different levels of unconscious and it is the deeper levels that I am referring to. At the deepest level there is just energy intermingling and flowing
throughout all things. All things are connected as the flow of energy is uninterrupted. Energy can organize into form but the energy of the form is not fixed but flows. The form looks fixed and is fixed in only as a river looks fixed. At any point in the river the water (the
energy) that was there a moment ago has flowed on.

It is extremely hard to dismiss the idea of duality. Though we do not need to dismiss it but see it in its true reality. A reality that makes sense only to the ego. Duality/identity exists only because singularity /oneness exists.

We look for meaning in everything, no, the ego looks for meaning in everything. The ego searches for meaning. For the ego cannot accept the deeper reality of oneness and singularity. In fact meaning only matters to the ego. It is always trying to prove that the concept of identity and duality is reality. For if they’re real then the ego is real. The search for meaning is the search for identity and ego to have meaning and to disprove oneness and singularity. Reality has no meaning, it is meaningless.

If there is no time, no place, no meaning and no – thing, what is there???

If you contemplate this question without any bias and let your deep unconscious answer, the answer is not nothing but – Everything/totality.

This is how it was with my son, Tyson. In his 23rd  year he was to be graduating from University, but he graduated from life instead. He had been fighting a vicious cancer in his body (melanoma) for a year and a half.  For me it was a year and a half of disbelieving, of denying the sinister possibility that his illness promised. It was inconceivable to me that, in the grand scheme of things, that such a kind and wonderful person could be taken from this earth that so desperately needed him. Well, he passed away  on June 7, 2000.  I realized then, that we are not meant to understand anything.  Nothing made any sense. The questions were so unanswerable, I just put it down to the mystery of life and began to believe that if there is a master plan, we have no idea what it is and are not meant to figure it out.

Life had engaged me in a dual and won. I was to feel my wounds for more than 2 years and,  after that, feel the scars forever. It’s funny the way life carries on.  You think this pain you carry with you would be visible to anyone who looked at  you.  But actually, it resides, hidden,  like an unwelcomed guest in  your gut. I felt as if I’d been initiated into a club I didn’t want to join and I had a life time membership.

When enough time had passed, I was able to be comforted by the memories of Tyson.  I was grateful to have been his Mom.  I could appreciate that I had been blessed with an angel. Tyson was really the most wonderful child.  I don’t  ever remember having to discipline him.  That makes him an angel, doesn’t it?? How many Moms could say that? So, yes, I was blessed to have had him in my life for 23 years.

Such a special person needs to live on and inspire  even after they are no longer with us. With this in mind, I established the ‘Tyson Murray Kind Spirit Award’ at his high school, Tagwi Secondary School, in Avonmore, Ontario. The Award goes to the student who most exemplifies Tyson’s qualities of kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion and tolerance.  The deserving student receives $1,000 and a plaque. I know Tyson would be so pleased to know he is continuing to influence people in a positive way.  For me, the Award acts like a bridge between the before and after times.  And as the years pass, the place in my heart for Tyson melds from pain to pleasure, from grief to pride, from questioning to acceptance. Life will never be the same without him. I will never forget the before times but I have to make the best of life with out him in these, the after times.

People are sensing that the traditional avenues have not worked, that all of a sudden this so-called security that they’ve built up isn’t there anymore. They come to a psychic for a different perspective.”

Psychics say their business is robust, as do astrologers and people who channel spirits, read palms and otherwise predict the future (albeit not the winning lottery numbers). Their clients, who include a growing number of men, are often professional advice-givers themselves, in fields like real estate and investments, and they typically hand over anywhere from $75 to $1,000 an hour for this form of insight.

“My Web traffic is up and up and up,” said Ronan, an Irish clairvoyant and spell caster who works from her lonely croft on the West Ireland Coast. “People will entertain the irrational when what they consider rational collapses.”
Quackery? Whatever. But after all, the nation’s supposed experts on the economy, from pundits on the networks to billionaire investment bankers, have not been exactly reliable. And spiritual readings, as they are known, appear to be one of the few growth sectors in a contracting economy.
“My phone is ringing off the hook,” said Roxanne Usleman, a psychic in Manhattan.
Ms. Usleman, who says she channels angels to advise her clients on interpersonal and financial matters, reported both a spike in traffic on her Web site and a significant surge in private consultations. She used to see comfortably 15 to 20 clients a week, she said. Now she meets with more than twice that number. “I’m having trouble squeezing in appointments,” she said.

Dawn Carr, a psychic in Boston, said her holiday bookings jumped as much as 70 percent this year over last, fueled in part by corporate bookings for holiday parties. “These people are looking for someone not just to entertain them, but to enlighten them,” she said.
Although most of us would settle for just enough telepathy to read our spouse’s mind, some people crave more.
“When you don’t know what to expect of a job interview or a business partnership,” said Gita V. Johar, a professor of at the Columbia University Business School, “that is when you’re most likely to turn to a psychic.”

The steep prices charged by practitioners of divination do not seem to have deterred many of the financially fretful. Ms. Hartman, the Los Angeles psychic, said her Internet traffic has picked up substantially, from about 30 visitors a day to more than 200. She charges from $150 for a 30-minute telephone reading to $500 for 90 minutes of “intuitive counseling.” In what is perhaps a sign of the times, the $70 moss-scented prosperity candle offered on her Web site has become her best seller, she said.
Many more men have joined the ranks of seekers. “In the old days men would turn to their wives and ask, ‘What did that goofball say, honey?’ ” said Michael Lutins, a New York writer and astrologer. “Now they are raising their heads, interested in matters that were once considered women’s stuff.” Mr. Lutin has lectured about astrology at such male-dominated institutions as the Harvard Business School Club of New York.

Ms. Ronan said that her once predominantly female clientele has also expanded. Men — among them lawyers, doctors, chief executives and insurance brokers — now make up about 50 percent of her business. They approach her, she said, with highly targeted questions, as if they were grilling an investment counselor.

In more ordinary economic cycles, psychics tend to offer guidance on romance and relationships. These days, they are besieged with questions about whether a pink slip is in the cards, whether a condo will sell, or whether a company will continue to prosper.

Alicia Bowling, who runs a sports bar in Manhattan, consulted a psychic when friction with a business partner seemed about to imperil her livelihood. “I used to go to my psychic about twice a year, but in the past year, yikes, I may have talked to her a dozen times,” said Ms. Bowling, 49. “I used to ask more about love, or will I ever be married, but with all these hard times, I wonder, ‘What’s going to happen to my bar and will I survive?’ ”

Sergei Pamukh, a New York stock trader, considers himself a skeptic about supernatural matters, but softened his stance after consulting Ms Ronan, the Irish psychic. When his business was flailing earlier this fall, she suggested that he travel to Moscow to meet with a billionaire mogul. “In two or three weeks I am going,” he said.

Ms.Ronan said she typically fields questions these days like, “Should I go back and live with my parents?” and “Is it O.K. to take my children out of private school?” In the past, she added, “they would ask, ‘Should I have a baby?’ But now they have put that on hold.
“Basically, what people want to know in a troubled economy,” she said, “is what can they do to reinvent themselves.”
Ms Ronan, whose clientele includes a growing circle of the rich and famous in the worlds of fashion, art and finance, observed that many of her clients were fretting about a global picture, not just their careers. “They are asking: ‘Where are we headed as a country? Are we entering a depression?’ I get a lot of politicians wondering where their party is going.”
Mostly they are after a little peace of mind.

“It pays to cover all your bets,” said Stuart McFaul, who runs a marketing and public relations company in San Francisco.
Mr. McFaul checks in with his psychic when he is stumped for answers about where his business, and his competition, might be headed. “I’m a big believer that you really don’t dismiss any opinion,” he said.
Ms. Bowling, the bar owner, is grateful for the slightest shred of insight. “In times that are this nerve-racking, all it takes is one word that kind of helps you get through your day,” she said.

The terms mysticism and prophecy in Biblical Christian terms have always been controversial as they conjure up visions of non-Christian practices performed by peoples such as the Druids, the priestly class in Britain, Ireland and Gaul, who are portrayed as sorcerers who opposed the coming of Christianity.

 The term mysticism is an –ism based on mystery, or “religious truth via divine revelation”, the term originating in the 14th century.  The use of the term today signifies “anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown” (see #1 definition of the word in dictionary.com i.e. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mystery). 

Mysticism or mystics are simply those who have a deeper understanding of a spiritual truth that the average citizen does not understand.  Daniel spoke of a mystery that King Nebuchadnezzar asked to be interpreted by his wise men in Chapter 2 of Daniel.  The Apostle Paul used the word mystery in his letters to the Romans, the Corinthians, the Ephesians, and the Colossians, as well as his letter to Titus.

Mysticism or mystics are not necessarily anti-Christian, as I’ve heard from some well-meaning Christians.  It is just that these truths are not comfortable for most Christians.  In our society, we want Christian thought that does not bring us discomfort or pain.  Entire volumes have been written about escaping trials or learning to “deal with” tragedy in our lives.  The book, “The Prayer of Jabez”, by Bruce Wilkerson, is a book about how Christians should pray like him, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.”  (1 Chronicles 4:10)  Bernie Kjos combats this thinking in his rebuttal of Wilkerson’s book in his column, “Problems with the Prayer of Jabez”. Suffering is only one of the mysteries that are mentioned in the Old and New Testaments.  Another is found in the Book of Job.  The question, “Why do bad things happen to good people” has been around as long as there have been people on this earth.  And as we see in Job’s case, it wasn’t because he was bad, or wicked, as his comforters tried to rationalize.    

Prophecy is another mystery that is difficult to explain.  Biblical Prophecy is often thought to be only the foretelling of the future.  But prophecy in terms of Biblical truth is always more than that.  It can be simply putting popular events in light of Biblical truth, such as is found in 2 Timothy 3:1-5, “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God–having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.” 

In this passage, Paul was not only speaking futuristically, but also how events he was seeing were relevant in God’s economy in his world.  You don’t have to be a prophet to see that all these issues are coming to pass.  A modern day “prophet” could simply be someone who gives you God’s perspective on the nightly news.  In other words, how current affairs are lining up with what God’s prophets of old said way back when.

Probably the best way to promote mysticism and prophecy to today’s church is to become as knowledgeable as possible on God’s perspective on what’s happening around us and then live a life that honors God.  The prayer that we all call “The Lord’s Prayer” is a good place to start.  Allow this prayer to consume your life, that you recognize that 1) God is your Father in Heaven, 2) You desire Him to return and want His will working in your life like it would if you were in Heaven right now, 3) that you are relying on Him for all your basic needs, 4) that you wish to live a life of daily repentance for your sins, which are debts that you owe, and that you will give others the benefit of the doubt when they owe you a debt, and 5) that you need help to keep away from the temptations of this word, which are many, and deliverance from the Evil One. 

A couple of Christian writers of note are Soren Kierkegaard, C.S. Lewis, or Watchman Nee.  They would all say from experience that to experience things that put us out of our comfort zone is to experience the Christian life.  A life without hardship or difficult is not a life that has been tested, and therefore a life that doesn’t know what it can actually accomplish through the power of the Holy Spirit working through it.

When I started meditating I found it to be a very relaxing, peaceful experience. Over time as I grew and discovered that meditation is really helpful for our spiritual growth, I really dived into it. I now consistently meditate every day, usually once in the morning for about an hour and then in the evening for about half an hour.

How does meditation help us live life to the fullest? The primary purpose of meditation is self-awareness: to really understand who and what we are. In that discovery we find that at our core we truly are the ultimate source of everything.

Most of us live a life of unawareness, where we are not really sure of who or what we are. We go through life thinking, “I’m a doctor”, “I’m a lawyer”, “I’m a kind person”, “I’m married”, “I’m a father” or “I’m a mother.” We place labels on ourselves but they don’t help us locate who we are. 

The ultimate truth of what we are cannot change. If it had to change, then how could we be it? That would be like saying, “I live in this house so I am this house.” But then if you move to a new house, you can’t possibly have been the initial house.

But then what are we? Are we truly a doctor? Are we truly a father? Even these things can change. Our children can die or we might end our profession, for instance. If you really think about it, even one’s character can change. For example, after meditating for so many decades now, I’ve become a much calmer and more peaceful person. That person I was before has changed, so does that mean I am the person I was before?

What meditation does is help us look within and discover who we are, what we truly are in a permanent state. When we slow down and look, we discover that which is permanent is very basic. It is like the space in which we live. We put furniture in the space, along with ourselves and many things. But when we remove everything, what is left is a space. Similarly, when we eat we put a lot of different tastes in our mouths and we enjoy them. Sometimes we don’t like them, but what is the taste we have when there is no food in our mouths? What is that experience? Going back to the basis of what we are without all the extra furnishings and tastes is what meditation enables us to do. It helps us discover who we are. When everything is removed, everything that isn’t permanent is taken away and we discover who we are because we start looking inward instead of constantly reacting to outside stimuli.

Many of us are like conditioned puppets. When someone praises us we feel so wonderful inside but when someone criticizes us we feel sad or angry. Who is this person that is feeling sad? Who is this person that is feeling excited? Who is this person on which all these events are occurring? This is what meditation sets out to answer. Its ultimate purpose is to discover who we are. If we don’t know who we are, we are really slaves or puppets to ourselves.

Meditation is about cutting those puppet strings. When you discover that almost everything that you have done is just a conditioned reaction, you stop reacting and rather start living, start just being. Through meditation, those things that are unconscious become conscious. When we discover that we’re not our thoughts, we’re not our conditioning, we’re not who we thought we were, our minds become quiet and we learn to just live. We can just be without all the mind chatter.

It’s a beautiful experience. I can only encourage you to seek out the quiet mind, and learn what it’s like to live in pure awareness, pure silence. We stop identifying with labels and we learn to just be. When we just be, there are no thoughts, there is just pure witnessing, pure awareness. The most wonderful part about it is that it is who we are. It is our real and natural self. Once we get rid of the mental clutter we discover our pure, true self. We’ve always been that, but these illusions of who we think we are prevented us from being who we really are.

An analogy would be to think of water. With water’s various forms, such as steam and ice, you can make a variety of shapes and sculptures. But at the core, those things are still water. In a similar way, we are still going to melt back into the vast ocean which we’ve always been and which we’ll always be. The reason for this is that we truly are permanent. We’re not that which is being created and destroyed. We are that which is eternal: simply awareness and just beingness without mental commentary.

Our thoughts and feelings continue but instead of identifying with them, we just witness them. We observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment or criticism. They just are. We make mistakes, we realize this is just our conditional response. We stop labeling. We allow ourselves to simply watch what we do, what comes out of us and what comes out of other people. We step back and realize that we are, at our core, just the awareness of what is.

When we become able to identify with our true selves, the grip that these thoughts have on us will weaken and no longer strangle us. We will learn to just live life, love life as it is, even with its ups and downs, without identifying with them. If we make a mistake or if others hurt us, we are able to act spontaneously to what is happening. What arises from this is beautiful and loving. Without all the labels, when we truly just be, we become very beautiful and loving.

Even love is just a label, but I believe it is the best label we can use to describe the ocean of awareness. Even though it is only a label, it truly is what manifests when we just be.

On our path to enlightenment, the only thing we need when we meditate is to be earnest in discovering who we are. When we do this, we’re awarded with discovering our truth selves and our false selves disappear. We learn to just be.
